u3a

A time of creativity and fulfilment for older people.

The third age refers to the period of time after the first age of childhood and the second age of fulltime employment and parental responsibility. U3A stands for The University of the Third Age.

It is a peer led learning co-operative of older people which enables members to share many educational, creative and leisure activities.

Anyone in the third age can join U3A – all you need is interest, and enthusiasm. It is called a university, but it has members, not students. No qualifications are required, and none are given.

The Ockment Centre initiated U3A in Okehampton and is used as contact and information point for members. Some meetings are held at the centre although interest group meetings are often held in members homes or other locations.

U3A in Okehampton is still in its infancy and groups are now beginning to be set up in a variety of subjects. The National headquarters of U3A holds a huge range of resources and publishes leaflets with advice on how to set up different interest groups.

Examples of ideas for groups include:
Antiques, Astrology, Backgammon, Cinema, Creative Writing, Decoupage, Field Studies, History, Meditation, Philosophy , Theatre, Telling Jokes and Zoology.

The list of subjects offered nationally exceeds 300 in number.
